SURKHET: Students in Surkhet staged protests on Friday demanding an impartial investigation and strict action against those responsible for the rape and death of Enisha BK (16).
Enisha was found unconscious in a community forest near Shaheed Park in Birendranagar Municipality-4 on March 7. She was rushed to Karnali Provincial Hospital for treatment, where the doctors pronounced her dead.
Students from her school organized a sit-in protest in front of the District Police Office, Surkhet, demanding a thorough investigation into the case and provide justice for the victim’s family. They said the state must take the incident seriously, make the facts related to the case public, and ensure that those responsible are brought to justice.
According to police, a post-mortem examination report states that the teenager died due to excessive bleeding following sexual activity.
Police have taken a 16-year-old boy into custody from the crime scene. The boy has reportedly told the police that the girl lost consciousness during the sexual encounter.
Meanwhile, Surkhet police have sought assistance from the Central Investigation Bureau (CIB) of Nepal Police to carry out a detailed investigation. DSP Monjung Budha Thapa, spokesperson for the District Police Office, Surkhet, said a specialized team from the CIB led by a police inspector was expected to arrive in Birendranagar on Friday evening.
“We requested support from the CIB considering the seriousness of the case,” Budha Thapa said. “The team will start its work on Saturday.”
Police say the first phase of the inquiry has already been completed. SP Sudhir Raj Shahi, chief of the District Police Office, Surkhet, said investigators have received the post-mortem report and have sent mobile phones and other electronic devices belonging to both the victims for forensic testing. Samples have also been forwarded to the Central Forensic Science Laboratory for specialized testing, he added.
Police are also analysing call records and other digital communications as part of the investigation. A polygraph team from the Karnali Province Police Office in Nepalgunj has also been assisting investigators.
Enisha’s family filed a complaint with the District Police Office, Surkhet, on March 9, alleging that she had been sexually assaulted and murdered.
Police have detained four individuals in connection with the case. The first accused was arrested on March 7 itself, and the remaining three on the following day. According to DSP Budha Thapa, all those held for investigation are below 18.
Following the incident, civil society members and human rights activists have also called for a fair investigation into the case and strict punishment for those responsible.
