KATHMANDU: Spain clinched the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023 with a narrow 1-0 victory against England in Sydney on Sunday.
Captain Olga Carmona scored in the 29th minute to secure La Roja’s first Women’s World Cup trophy. Spain intercepted England’s Lucy Bronze’s pass and moved the ball into the space vacated by Bronze. Mariona Caldentey then played a perfectly weighted pass to Carmona, who drove the ball low and hard just inside the left post of England’s keeper Mary Earps.
Earps kept England in the game when she stopped Jenni Hermoso’s penalty in the 70th minute. Spain was awarded the penalty after a lengthy VAR review concluded that Keira Walsh handled the ball inside the box.
Spain maintained their control and composure for the rest of the match, preventing England from making a comeback.
Goal-scorer Carmona was adjudged Player of the Match, while Spanish midfielder Aitana Bonmati was named Player of the Tournament. England’s goalkeeper Earps won the Golden Glove. Similarly, Salma Paralluelo was declared the Young Player of the Tournament.
