Prithvi Subba Gurung
KATHMANDU: Minister for Communications and Information Technology, Prithvi Subba Gurung, has warned that social media platforms, including Facebook, will be banned in Nepal if they fail to register with the government by the stipulated deadline.
Addressing the 9th General Convention of the Sancharika Samuha in Kathmandu on Friday, Gurung said that all social media platforms operating in Nepal must comply with national regulations. He clarified that failure to register within the deadline would result in a ban.
Stating that only a few days are remaining in the one-month extended deadline for social media registration, Gurung said that social media platforms must comply if they are to continue their operation in Nepal. “Only two or three days are left before the one-month period ends, and no one has come forward,” he said. “They are defying the government.”
Gurung clarified that the social media regulation is intended to regulate platforms, not to shut down media outlets. He added that the regulation aims to ensure accountability and responsible use of digital platforms.
