KATHMANDU: Notorious serial killer Charles Sobhraj, who was released from jail in Nepal in 2022, faces the possibility of returning to prison.
Former officers of London’s Metropolitan City Gary Copson and Jackie Malton have compiled evidence linking Sobhraj to the deaths of two Dutch tourists in Thailand in 1975, according to the Daily Mail.
The two ex-Greater London police officers have submitted their investigation file to the Dutch police. They have stated that the Netherlands can prosecute Sobhraj as there is no statute of limitations in the case, the Daily Mail reported.
“The Dutch can pursue the murder of Dutch citizens anywhere in the world. The murders of Henricus Bitanja (29) and Cornelia Hemkar (25) are atrocious, so they could bring those murders that were committed in Thailand to court,” Copson said in a Channel 4 documentary scheduled to air on Thursday, according to the Daily Mail.
Sobhraj was arrested in Nepal in 2003.
According to the British news portal, Copson and Malton tracked down tapes recorded by Julie Clarke and Richard Neville for their 1981 book on Sobhraj, in which Sobhraj can be heard admitting to the murders, saying: “I hope that this won’t hang me one day.”
When Copson and Malton confronted Sobhraj about their findings, Sobhraj threatened to file a defamation case against the duo, according to the Daily Mail.
