Sloganeering disrupts meeting of pro-monarchy leaders

KATHMANDU: A meeting of the Joint People’s Movement Committee for Restoration of Monarchy, which has been agitating for the restoration of the monarchy and a Hindu state, held in Kathmandu on Wednesday has been disrupted.

The meeting was called to review the ongoing activities of and prepare a strategy for the next phase of the protest. However, the meeting was thrown into chaos due to protests by youths.

Committee coordinator Navaraj Subedi and Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP) Nepal Chairperson Kamal Thapa, among others, were present in the meeting. However, many participants objected to the absence of RPP Chairperson Rajendra Lingden. Some even resorted to sloganeering against Lingden.

They criticized Lingden for prioritizing the parliamentary session over the review meeting. They demanded that all RPP parliamentarians be recalled, arguing that it was inappropriate for RPP lawmakers to continue receiving salaries while others were compelled to join the movement.

Continuous sloganeering and commotion forced RPP Nepal Chairperson Thapa to stop his address midway.

Because of the disruption, the committee could not devise protest programs for the second phase of the movement. Coordinator Subedi said the committee would soon announce programs for the second phase.

After Subedi adjourned the meeting, the youths held a separate gathering at the same venue.
