Six plays light up Kathmandu’s theater scene

KATHMANDU: The theater scene in Kathmandu is abuzz with activity, with six plays of varied themes being staged in different theaters.

These plays explore a wide range of themes — from youth struggles and women’s empowerment to love in search of identity and the experiences of sexual and gender minorities.

Popular theaters in Kathmandu like Mandala, Kausi, Kantipur, Sarwanam Theater and Oscar College are drawing audiences in large numbers, reflecting a growing interest in stage performances.

With half a dozen plays being staged simultaneously, most theater actors are staying busy. At the same time, a new wave of actors, directors, and playwrights is emerging on the capital’s theater scene. Even film actors are increasingly stepping onto the stage.

Here’s a look at plays being staged in Kathmandu:

Dorumba
Venue: Sadhana Ghar, Oscar International College

Set during Nepal’s Maoist conflict, Dorumba portrays the suffering of people caught between the state and the rebels. Written by Suman Kumar Bagale and directed by Sudip Sitaula, the play features students from the college. It runs from July 30 to August 9.

Jab Phool Le Aakar Linchha(When the Flower Takes Shape)
Venue: Sarwanam Theater

Staged since July 27, this play is based on the story of a flower and explores the lives of two characters: a painter and a flower. The painter, who is ridiculed for his appearance, values inner beauty, while the flower, which is tired of being objectified, seeks identity and self-worth. The play features trainees from the theater’s 21st batch and runs until August 4.

Swarnadesh – The Dreamland of Milk and Graves
Venue: Mandala Theater, Thapagaun

Running since July 24, Swarnadesh is based on the real-life journeys of Nepali youths attempting to reach the USA through illegal jungle routes. Written by Sarita Kathayat and directed by debutant Aakash Nepali, the play presents emotional and physical struggles along the way. It runs through August 10.

Shirishko Phool (Blue Mimosa)
Venue: Kantipur Theater, Gairidhara

This adaptation of Parijat’s classic novel ‘Shirishko Phool’ delves into the complex relationship between Suyogbir and Sakambari. Adapted for the stage by Patrika Ghimire, the play features actors Jivan Luintel, Sanisha Bhattarai and Raj Neupane. It runs from July 23 to August 12.

Kagtaali (Fluke)
Venue: Kausi Theater, Teku

Presented in radio play format, Kagtaali explores women’s empowerment through the story of a couple’s anniversary that takes a dark turn. A seemingly loving surprise devolves into conflict and violence, sparking deeper questions about women’s roles and independence. Written and directed by Chandra Aryal, it features a large ensemble cast and runs from July 22 to August 15.

Chandralai Kasle Maryo? (Who Killed Chandra? )
Venue: Mandala Theater

This play brings the struggles of the sexual and gender minority community to centre stage — a topic rarely explored in Nepali theater. It questions why society struggles to accept changes in identity, voice and behavior as people grow. Written, directed, and performed by Sandeep Shrestha, the play runs from July 9 to August 3 and features a supporting cast including Bhawana Upreti, Sita Devi Timalsena, Milan Karki and others.
