JANAKPURDHAM: Sharat Singh Bhandari of Loktantrik Samajbadi Party (LSP) has been elected to the House of Representatives from the Mahottari-2 constituency.
This is his seventh victory in general elections.
He defeated his closest contender Dr Bijay Kumar Singh of Tarai Madhesh Loktantrik Party by more than 14,000 votes. While Bhandari received 25,190 votes, Singh polled 11,120 votes.
This is the ninth straight election that Bhandari has contested. He has contested all seven elections after the political change of 1990. Likewise, he was elected to the parliament during the Panchayati regime in 1986 and 1981, respectively.
Though Bhandari faced defeat in the 1991 election, he contested the 1994 election as an independent candidate and won. He was elected as the candidate of the Nepali Congress in 1999. He won the 2008 Constituent Assembly (CA) election as a candidate of the Madhesi People’s Rights Forum. Bhandari, however, was defeated in the 2013 CA election.
He then joined Rastriya Janata Party and won the 2017 election.
In total, he has held the post of minister and minister of state for a record 15 times.
