KATHMANDU: A committee formed to recommend the next chairperson for the Securities Board of Nepal (Sebon) has scrapped the selection process.
The committee was undecided on recommending a candidate for appointment as only two out of the five shortlisted candidates appeared for the interview and presentation session. Since the Securities Act requires the selection committee to recommend three names to the cabinet, the committee had sought suggestions from the Office of the Attorney General.
The position has been lying vacant since Ramesh Hamal completed his term as the chairperson of the stock market regulator on January 5. A total of 19 candidates had applied for the position.
The selection committee had shortlisted Santosh Narayan Shrestha, Mukti Shrestha, Dr. Navaraj Adhikari, Chiran Jivi Chapagain, and Krishna Karki for the interview and presentation. However, only Santosh Narayan Shrestha and Mukti Shrestha appeared for the interview and presentation.
The Office of the Attorney General advised the committee that it cannot recommend just two names to the cabinet. It suggested that the committee either start a fresh selection process or include the candidate with the highest marks in the three-member shortlist.
The selection committee comprises of the National Planning Commission Vice Chairperson, the Finance Secretary, and an expert member.
