KATHMANDU: The 29-day protest by school teachers has ended after the government agreed to implement the nine-point proposal put forward by the Confederation of Nepali Teachers (CNT).
Minister for Education, Science and Technology, Raghuji Pant, said that the agreement has already been endorsed by the cabinet meeting held on Wednesday.
CNT announced the suspension of the movement following negotiations at the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology on Wednesday evening, CNT President Laxmi Kishor Subedi said during a press conference. “He added that most of the demands of temporary and permanent teachers have been addressed in the nine-point agreement,” he added.
Subedi added that an agreement has been reached to pass the School Education Bill by June.
Chief whips of the ruling coalition partners, CPN-UML and Nepali Congress (NC) in the House of Representatives, have signed a commitment letter to ensure the passage of the School Education Bill by June.
“Some demands have been addressed by the cabinet. Likewise, there is a commitment to enact the School Education Bill by June,” Subedi said. “We have decided to suspend the protest. I urge all teachers to return to schools and resume admissions, regular classes and examinations.”
Subedi, however, warned that if the Bill is not passed within the stipulated time, the CNT would be compelled to launch a stronger protest.
