KATHMANDU: The Supreme Court has dismissed a writ petition seeking to halt the implementation of the national identity card.

A division bench of Chief Justice Prakash Man Singh Raut and Justices Abdul Aziz Musalman and Nrip Dhwaj Niraula took the decision on Sunday.

The dismissal of the petition has paved the way for the government to proceed with national ID card implementation.

The writ was filed after the government decided to make the national identity card mandatory for accessing social security allowances, mobile SIM cards, and all public services.

A cabinet meeting held on June 6 2024 had decided to make the national identity card mandatory for renewing social security allowances in the first phase in 28 districts in the first phase starting from July 16, 2024.
