KATHMANDU: The Sagarmatha National Park Office has permitted private helicopter companies to operate flights, provided they do not disturb or impact the national park’s forest, wildlife and biodiversity.

Issuing a notice on Tuesday, Senior Conservation Officer Sushma Rana said that operators must pay the designated revenue and comply with existing laws for flights, landings and hovering operations in the national park which has been established to protect the ecosystem, forests, wildlife, biodiversity and cultural heritage.

Earlier, the national park office, Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality and local youth groups have decided to ban all commercial helicopter flights to the Everest region from January 1. However, CAAN and AOAN (Airlines Operators Association of Nepal), the industry lobby of airlines operating in the country, opposed the decision.

Sagarmatha National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage site. Thousands of tourists visit the national park every year, contributing significantly to the national and local economies and creating employment opportunities for the local people.

According to the notice, helicopter companies can operate scenic flights for tourists to view Mount Everest and other peaks, lakes and natural beauty; conduct search and rescue operations for tourists and locals; and transport construction materials, food supplies and other essential items after obtaining authorization.

The AOAN, a few days ago, suspended all helicopter flights to the Everest region, citing security reasons. It also warned that it would suspend fixed-wing flights if airline companies are not assured of security.
