KATHMANDU: Senior Advocate Sabita Bhandari has become the first Nepali woman to be appointed Attorney General.

President Ram Chandra Paudel appointed Bhandari to the position on the recommendation of Prime Minister Sushila Karki on Sunday evening.

“President Ram Chandra Paudel has appointed Sabita Bhandari as the Attorney General on the recommendation of Prime Minister Sushila Karki, as per Article 157 (2) of the Constitution of Nepal, 2015,” read a statement issued by the Office of the President.

Earlier in the day, Attorney General Ramesh Badal, who was appointed in July last year by KP Sharma Oli, stepped down. Bhandari was appointed following the approval of Badal’s resignation.

It is customary for Attorneys General, who are appointed on the recommendation of the Prime Minister, to submit their resignation once a new Prime Minister takes office.
