KATHMANDU: Rubi Kumari of the Shram Sanskriti Party has been elected Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives.

In the voting held on Friday, 229 lawmakers voted in favor of the proposal to elect Rubi as the Deputy Speaker, while five voted against the proposal. Similarly, 22 lawmakers abstained.

Earlier, the lower house rejected a proposal to elect Saraswati Lama of the Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP) by an overwhelming majority.

Dol Prasad Aryal of the RSP was unanimously elected Speaker on Sunday. Since the Speaker and Deputy Speaker cannot be from the same party, the RSP decided to support an SSP candidate for Deputy Speaker.

RSP commands a two-thirds majority in the lower house. Lawmakers from both SSP and RSP, along with members of opposition parties, including the Nepali Congress (NC) and Nepali Communist Party (NCP), voted in Thakur’s favor.

Thakur, 26, hails from Janakpur-14 in Dhanusha. She was elected to the House of Representatives under the proportional representation system from the SSP, marking her rise as one of the youngest leaders to assume a key constitutional position.
