KATHMANDU: The Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) has swept all 15 House of Representatives seats in three districts of Kathmandu Valley, dealing a major electoral blow to the CPN-UML and Nepali Congress (NC), which had long dominated the valley’s politics.
The valley comprises 10 constituencies in Kathmandu, three in Lalitpur, and two in Bhaktapur. In most elections since 1991, the CPN-UML had maintained a strong presence across these districts.
However, the support bases of these two parties had started to erode in 2022 itself. In the previous general elections, UML won only two seats in the Valley, while NC won six, one each in Lalitpur and Bhaktapur and four in Kathmandu.
According to the final results of the first-past-the-post (FPTP) vote count, RSP candidates secured victories in all constituencies in Kathmandu, Bhaktapur and Lalitpur. Among them, Shishir Khanal from Kathmandu-6, Ganesh Parajuli from Kathmandu-7, Biraj Bhakta Shrestha from Kathmandu-8, and Tosima Karki from Lalitpur-3 were re-elected for a second consecutive term, having also won the 2022 elections.
