KATHMANDU: The Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) has expressed its support for the consensus candidate for the Prime Minister selected with the involvement of Gen Z representatives.
In a statement issued on Thursday, the party said it remains hopeful that the candidate would secure broad political endorsement.
“The RSP makes it clear that it will never compromise on fundamental democratic values and principles such as the spirit of the Constitution, the federal republican system, the party’s political ideology, rule of law, people’s sovereignty, pluralism and the guarantee of fundamental rights,” the party said in the statement.
Recalling Article 83 of the Constitution, which provides for a bicameral federal legislature, the party stressed the need to preserve the continuity of the National Assembly and maintain stability, while ensuring that the interim government holds fresh parliamentary elections within six months. This, the party said, would balance the mandate of the ongoing protest movement with the necessity of a renewed public mandate.
The RSP also urged the President to take an active role in guiding the transitional political course through dialogue and consensus. It also called for a comprehensive amendment of the Constitution, a high-level judicial inquiry into the violent suppression of the September 8 movement and the formation of independent commissions to investigate and adjudicate major corruption cases since 1990.
The party has demanded that these commissions be formed within 15 days of the formation of a new government.
