RSP, RPP lawmakers continue House protest

KATHMANDU: Lawmakers of the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) and Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP) boycotted the House of Representatives meeting on Tuesday as well, demanding the formation of a high-level parliamentary probe committee into the recent ‘visit visa’ scandal.

As soon as the session began on Tuesday, the two parties staged a walkout, stating that the visit visa case involves serious incidents of human trafficking and requires an independent investigation.

In response, Speaker Devraj Ghimire allowed RSP leader Biraj Bhakta Shrestha to speak. Shrestha said that although many Nepali youths are forced to go abroad for education and employment opportunities, it is unacceptable for corruption to occur under the pretext of ‘visit visa’. He called for a parliamentary investigation to uncover collusion and systemic corruption. He criticized the government-formed committee as superficial and ineffective.

Similarly, RPP lawmaker Deepak Bahadur Singh objected to statements made by Nepali Congress (NC) lawmakers in defence of those involved in the scandal. He claimed that the government has ignored the plight of Nepalis, who travel abroad on visit visas, and called for an investigation into the corruption racket exploiting these job seekers.

Singh further added that RPP lawmakers have declined to accept any allowances for the day in protest.
