KATHMANDU: Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) has expelled its suspended General Secretary, Dr Mukul Dhakal, from the party’s general membership.
The decision was made during a central committee meeting held on Tuesday, according to Acting Spokesperson Manish Jha.
The move follows the party’s earlier decision to suspend Dr Dhakal due to internal conflicts and power struggles that trace back to the House of Representatives by-elections in the last week of April. After the elections, Dr Dhakal was sent on a nationwide tour to meet party cadres and prepare a comprehensive report on the party’s standing and future prospects.
Although Dr Dhakal was expected to present this report internally, he leaked it to the media instead. In the report, he criticized RSP President Rabi Lamichhane, accusing him of shirking his responsibilities and tarnishing the party’s reputation. Dr Dhakal also warned that the party had weakened and would struggle in the 2027 elections unless its leaders, including the President, changed their conduct.
RSP initially suspended Dr Dhakal for a week due to disciplinary concerns on July 4. Following this, he was removed from his positions as General Secretary, spokesperson, and central committee member. However, he retained his status as a general member of the party until the recent decision to expel him entirely.
Responding to the decision, Dr Dhakal said he has been expelled from Rabi Lamichhane’s club. “The club does not have the authority to expel anyone from the RSP. Once the judicial body annuls this club’s action, Rabi Lamichhane should resigne from the party’s general membership on moral grounds,” he wrote in a post on his Facebook page. “Although I should not expect moral integrity from someone as morally corrupt as Rabi Lamichhane, let’s see how far his depravity goes—time will reveal the truth.”
