KATHMANDU: The Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) has called for a special session of the House of Representatives.

The party said a special session of the House is needed for immediate discussions on current issues.

RSP’s Acting Spokesperson Manish Jha said in a press statement issued on Wednesday that civil society and people’s representatives cannot remain silent in the face of a weak economy, poor disaster management, tense social conditions and growing despair among youth. The party has also accused the government of engaging in self-interested practices.

The party was referring to the ruling UML’s acceptance of land from Bhat-Bhateni Supermarket owner Min Bahadur Gurung for its office building construction. Jha claimed that the decision has shaken the government’s stance on good governance. “The ruling party’s acceptance of land worth tens of millions of rupees from a businessman facing legal issues demonstrates a frightening practice of conflict of interest, undermining the commitment to good governance,” Jha said in the press statement.

The RSP also claimed that the government appears ineffective due to a lack of confidence and competence. “With faltering confidence and competence, the two-thirds majority government seems like a caretaker. Even the parliamentary committees meant to oversee the government have become hostages to the ruling party’s majority,” the RSP said in the statement.
