KATHMANDU: The government has approved a budget of Rs 80 million for the improvement of the Thankot-Chitlang road, also known as Ganesh Man Highway.

The finance ministry allocated the budget based on a proposal submitted by Chandragiri Municipality.

Thankot-Chitlang is one of the oldest roads linking Kathmandu to other parts of the country. The first motor cars were transported to Kathmandu Valley from Bhimphedi in Makwanpur using this very route. Despite its long existence, the road, has not received priority from the authorities so far. The sorry condition of the road has been causing difficulties for both passengers and drivers. A recent car accident resulting in five fatalities underscored the urgent need for upgradation of this vital road.

Meanwhile, Minister for Labor and Transport Management, Prakash Jwala, conducted an inspection of the road on Thursday. During the visit, he directed relevant agencies to prioritize the rehabilitation of this crucial road connecting Kathmandu with Makwanpur district without any delay.
