Rs 138 billion flows out of country for overseas education

KATHMANDU: Despite the presence of various universities and higher education institutions within the country, a large amount of money continues to flow abroad for education.

According to the Nepal Rastra Bank, Rs 138.48 billion was spent abroad solely on education in the fiscal year 2024/25. Such expenses stood at Rs 125.13 billion in the previous fiscal year.

Under the services account, travel expenses rose by 18.1%, reaching Rs 223.72 billion, up from Rs 189.43 billion the previous year, the central bank said in its annual report.

Net service income remained in a deficit of Rs 90.94 billion in 2024/25, compared to a deficit of Rs 55.86 billion in the previous fiscal year.

Meanwhile, travel income under the services account grew by 7.7% to Rs 88.66 billion, up from Rs 82.33 billion a year earlier.
