KATHMANDU: Shashi Kumar Khaniya, mayor of Khairhani Municipality, and Avinash Kumar Singh, first secretary at the Embassy of India, Kathmandu, jointly inaugurated the Embankment and Launching Apron Dhungre Khola River Training Works Project in Khairahani Municipality of Chitwan on Friday.
The project was constructed with financial assistance of Rs 36.74 million from the Government of India, according to a press statement issued by the Embassy of India in Kathmandu.
People’s representatives, government officials, members of the project user committee and social workers were present in the inauguration ceremony.
The initiative, under the ‘Nepal-India Development Cooperation,’ focuses on preventing agricultural land erosion, deforestation and mitigating the risk associated with river dynamics, according to the embassy. It also addresses challenges such as frequent evictions due to river flood flow.
Speaking at the ceremony, Mayor Khaniya expressed gratitude for the continued developmental support from the Indian government.
The project is a part of over 551 High Impact Community Development Projects (HICDPs) undertaken by the Government of India in Nepal since 2003. According to the embassy, 489 of those projects have already been completed.
