KATHMANDU: The Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) has said that the floods in one of the tributaries of the Bhotekoshi River in Rasuwagadhi of Rasuwa on Tuesday morning affected 240 MW of hydropower generation.

NEA Executive Director Hitendra Dev Shakya said on Tuesday that the flood affected NEA projects with a combined capacity of 230 MW and a project of 10 MW on Mailung river built by an independent power producer.

The Rasuwagadhi Hydropower Project (111 MW) was among the worst-hit, according to Shakya. Similarly, the Trishuli-3A (60 MW) has also sustained major damage. While other projects may resume generation once the floodwaters recede, it will take more time for Rasuwagadhi and Trishuli-3A to restart, said Shakya.

The flood also washed away a bridge on the Lendhe Khola River—an important trade infrastructure on the Nepal-China border.

Speaking at a press meet organized to mark the completion of his 100 days in office, Shakya said NEA currently has a liability of Rs 14 billion. “We are seeking short-term funding to manage this gap,” he said, adding that a lack of funds has delayed the construction of the Hetauda-Dhalkebar transmission line.

Reflecting on his 100 days in office, Shakya said that necessary steps have been taken to ensure a quality and reliable electricity supply through new transmission line projects.
