Ram Chandra Poudel elected Nepal’s third President

KATHMANDU: Ram Chandra Poudel has been elected as the new President of Nepal.

In the election held on Thursday, Poudel received 33,802 votes. Subash Chandra Nembang, the only other candidate in the presidential election, received 15,518 votes.

It’s a turnaround of fortune for the veteran Nepali Congress leader who was defeated in the election for the Prime Minister in parliament for 17 times in 2010.

Altogether 313 members of federal parliament and 518 members of province assemblies voted in the election. Members of federal parliament had 24,727 weighted votes, while province assembly members had 24,864 weighted votes.

Poudel was certain to win the election, as he had the support of the nine-party coalition. Nembang had the support of only his party CPN-UML.
