KATHMANDU: District Administration Office (DAO), Kathmandu, has restored Former Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Home Affairs Rabi Lamichhane’s Nepali citizenship.
Two days after the Supreme Court declared his citizenship certificate invalid, Lamichhane submitted an application at DAO Kathmandu on Sunday, requesting for restoration of his citizenship.
As per Section 10 of the Nepal Citizenship Act, the citizenship of Nepali will become invalid once s/he voluntarily acquires foreign citizenship. The citizenship, however, can be restored by submitting an application at the concerned DAO with proof of abandoning foreign citizenship.
The apex court decision meant Lamichhane was unfit to continue as the Member of House of Representatives well as Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Home Affiars. Further, he is unfit to become chairman of his party Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP).
Now that Lamichhane’s citizenship has been restored, RSP has called a meeting of its central committee members later today. The meeting is expected to elect him to the post of chairman.
