KATHMANDU: Rastriya Swatantra Party Chairman Rabi Lamichhane has been elected to the House of Representatives from the Chitwan-2 constituency.
According to counting results published by the Election Commission, Lamichhane defeated his closest contender Umesh Shrestha by a whopping 34,162 votes. While Lamichhane received 49,261 votes, Shrestha and CPN-UML Krishna Bhakta Pokharel got 15,099 and 14,649 votes, respectively.
Shrestha, who is also a Minister of State in Sher Bahadur Deuba’s cabinet, contested the election as the common candidate of the five-party ruling coalition, while UML’s Pokharel was elected from Chitwan-2 in 2017.
A total of 84,317 votes were cast in Chitwan-2, according to the Election Commission.
The constituency used to be regarded as the bastion of CPN-UML. Pokharel had won past two elections in the constituency.
