KATHMANDU: Former Vice President of the Nepali Congress, Bimalendra Nidhi, has said that the current ruling coalition will remain intact until 2027.

“It is natural for questions to be raised about the government,” he told Himal Press. “There should also be scrutiny of ministers’ performance. But as far as the ruling coalition is concerned, it will last until the upcoming election.”

Nidhi also claimed that the next general election will be held under the leadership of Sher Bahadur Deuba. “As per the seven-point agreement with CPN-UML, NC President Sher Bahadur Deuba will lead the next term of the government and will oversee the national elections,” he said.

Although some NC leaders are calling for the party leadership to hold the general convention as stipulated by the party statute, Nidhi said the party has not begun preparation for the 15th General Convention yet.

Important tasks such as the renewal and distribution of active party memberships, which are crucial for the general convention, are still incomplete.

“It is unlikely that the general convention will be held within the four-year timeframe stipulated by the party statute. However, the statute allows for an extension of up to one year,” Nidhi said. “Since it does not seem likely the convention will be held in the fourth year, we hope it happens in the fifth year. If needed, we may add another month or two.”

Stating that he contested for the party presidency in the 14th General Convention, Nidhi said he will not run for the positions of Vice President or General Secretary. “I will take an appropriate decision at the right time,” he added.

Nidhi also said the election schedule should be restructured to make the federal system more effective. He suggested holding federal elections first, followed by provincial and then local government elections.
