KATHMANDU: Total net profit of commercial banks fell 18.61% to Rs 13.14 billion in the first quarter of the fiscal year 2025/26.
A study of the quarterly reports of 20 commercial banks in the country shows total net profit declined to Rs 13.14 billion in the review quarter, down from Rs 16.18 billion in the same quarter of the previous fiscal year.
Only five Class ‘A’ banks – Rastriya Banijya Bank Ltd (RBBL), Global IME Bank Ltd, Everest Bank Ltd, Sanima Bank Ltd and NIC Asia Bank Ltd – reported net profit growth in the first quarter. Rastriya Banijya Bank Ltd posted the highest net profit growth of 295.24%. Next were Global IME (22.88%), Sanima (13.78%), NIC Asia (10.91%) and Everest Bank (4.61%).
Global IME reported the highest net profit of Rs 1.86 billion in the review quarter, compared to Rs 1.51 billion in the same period of the previous fiscal year. Nabil Bank and Prime Commercial Bank were next with net profits of Rs 1.76 billion and Rs 1.26 billion, respectively.
Fifteen commercial banks saw their net profit fall in the review period. The biggest decline came from Citizens Bank Ltd (211.11%) which reported a loss of Rs 220 million, compared to a net profit of Rs 200 million in the same quarter of the previous fiscal year. Similarly, Agricultural Development Bank Ltd saw its net profit fall from Rs 190 million to Rs 5.7 million.
Global IME also leads in terms of deposit mobilisation. According to the study, Global IME has outstanding total deposits of Rs 582.25 billion. Nabil Bank and RBBL are next with total deposits of Rs 556.62 billion and Rs 528.09 billion, respectively.
Total deposits mobilised by commercial banks stood at Rs 6.65 trillion at the end of the first quarter.
Global IME was also on top in terms of credit disbursement, with an outstanding credit portfolio of Rs 421.25 billion. Nabil Bank and Nepal Investment Mega Bank Ltd were next with total lending of Rs 421.03 billion and Rs 330.81 billion.
Total credit mobilisation of commercial banks reached Rs 4,738.63 billion in the first quarter.
