KATHMANDU: The Office of the Province Chief of Bagmati Province has called on parties represented in the Bagmati Province Assembly to stake a claim to form a new government.
Province Chief Deepak Prasad Devkota has invited members of the Provincial Assembly who can demonstrate a majority with the support of two or more parties to submit their claim by 2 pm on Tuesday, according to Devendra Sapkota, spokesperson for the Office of the Province Chief.
“A member of the Provincial Assembly who can secure a majority with the backing of two or more parties is invited to make a claim to form the government as per Article 168(2) of the Constitution of Nepal, 2015,” reads the statement issued by the Office of the Province Chief.
Indra Bahadur Baniya of the Nepali Congress (NC) is expected to claim the position of Chief Minister with the support of the CPN-UML.
Chief Minister Bahadur Singh Lama, also from the NC, stepped down from his position on Sunday afternoon, paving the way for the formation of a new government in the province.
Earlier, Baniya had filed a no-confidence motion against Lama within the NC’s parliamentary party in the Bagmati Province Assembly. After Lama failed the motion, he lost to Baniya in the election for the new parliamentary party leader.
