Process of electing Speaker begins today

KATHMANDU: The Federal Parliament Secretariat is beginning the process to elect the Speaker of the House of Representatives on Friday.

According to the schedule published by the secretariat, the election for the Speaker will take place during the House of Representatives meeting scheduled for 11:00 am on Sunday.

As per the House of Representatives Regulations, 2022, the election schedule was made public after the senior-most member, who is chairing House meetings until the Speaker is elected, fixed the date and time of the election.

Candidates are filing their nominations between 11 am and 2 pm on Friday. The final list of candidates will be published at 2:30 pm. If there is more than one candidate, the voting process will proceed during the meeting on Sunday.

However, the likelihood of a contest appears low as the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) commands a strong majority in the House of Representatives. The party has already decided to pick its Vice President, Dol Prasad Aryal, as its candidate for Speaker.
