Prez urges Gen Z to make March 5 polls a historic success

KATHMANDU: President Ram Chandra Paudel has called on Generation Z to make history by ensuring the success of the House of Representatives election scheduled for March 5.

He made this appeal during a discussion with Gen Z campaigners and members of the interim government at the Office of the President on Thursday.

According to President Paudel’s press adviser, Kiran Pokharel, the President said the new election had been announced with the hope that the country envisioned by the youth movement—free from corruption, nepotism, favoritism, and discrimination, and led by capable people—could be realized. He urged the youth not to take this election as a national campaign to reshape the country’s destiny.

“You young people must step forward to build a better House of Representatives,” President Paudel said. “The corrupt and the crooked should not win. Honest and capable people should be elected so that the nation can move toward justice, good governance and progress. The situation that forces young Nepalis to go abroad for survival must come to an end.”

President Paudel said that although the president is not an executive authority under the current constitution and parliamentary system, he had involved the government and representatives of Gen Z in the discussion to show respect for the youth movement. He said the government would give due attention to the remaining demands of the movement.

Paudel added that the formation of the interim government itself was a result of the youth movement’s campaign to end corruption and establish good governance.

The President also cautioned the youth to remain vigilant against those who might try to exploit their movement for personal or political gain.

Speaking on the occasion, Prime Minister Sushila Karki praised President Paudel’s tireless overnight efforts to stabilize the nation despite his advanced age and health concerns. She said President Paudel had been devoted to the people and the country since his early years and urged everyone to take his words as the “voice of conscience” of a mature and committed leader.

Representatives of Gen Z clarified that their movement was a struggle for social and economic justice and against misgovernance and corruption, not against the constitution, democracy, federalism, or inclusivity.

They reaffirmed their firm commitment to ensuring that the election takes place as planned, but also stressed that the movement’s demands must be recognized and addressed.
