Press Council Nepal decides to develop standards for YouTube channels

KATHMANDU: Press Council Nepal (PCN) has decided to develop specific regulatory standards for journalism conducted through YouTube and other digital platforms.

A meeting of the media regulatory body, chaired by its senior-most member, Ram Prasad Dahal, took the decision on Friday.

“Press Council Nepal has taken important decisions including upholding constitutionally enshrined press freedom, enforcing strict adherence to the code of conduct for dignified journalism, and implementing standards for operating YouTube channels,” Dahal said in a social media post, sharing decisions taken by the meeting.

Issuing a statement, the PCN said it extensive discussions on recent trends in Nepali journalism, including court cases involving media personnel, misuse of press freedom by some journalists, and financial and structural crises in the media sector and concluded that it would not support any action, from any party, that undermines press freedom as enshrined in the Constitution.

The PCN also decided to formulate a four-year action plan in line with its legal jurisdiction. Amendments to the Journalistic Code of Conduct, Media Directives, and internal procedural rules will be pursued, it added.

Nima Kafle, Keshav Sharan Lamichhane, Nakul Aryal, Padmaraj Joshi, Balkrishna Adhikari, Ram Prasad Dahal, Bijay Raj Adhikari, Shantaraj Bidari and Member Secretary Min Kumar Sharma attended the meeting.
