KATHMANDU: The silence period for the presidential election scheduled for March 9 is beginning from Monday midnight.
As per the Election Code of Conduct, 2023, issued by the Election Commission, the silence period will be enforced 48 hours prior to the voting day and continue until the voting centers close on the day of the election.
During the silence period, all election-related publicity activities such as discussions, assemblies, meetings, workshops, seminars, and any form of canvassing through electronic media including SMS, Facebook, Viber, and social sites are strictly prohibited, as stated in Clause 24 (5) of the Election (Offence and Punishment) Act, 2016 and Clause 17 of the Election Code of Conduct, 2023.
“Additionally, issuing statements, press releases, publishing and broadcasting any materials, and disseminating materials projecting victory or defeat through communication media is also banned,” The EC added in the statement.
The EC has emphasized the need for all concerned parties to maintain fairness and dignity in the election process by adhering to the election laws and the code of conduct.
