Pratik Thapa arrested; to be presented before court on Sunday

KATHMANDU: Police have arrested Pratik Thapa, the son of CPN-UML Vice Chairperson and former Home Minister Ram Bahadur Thapa, more than a year after an arrest warrant was issued against him.

According to the Kathmandu Valley Crime Investigation Office, Pratik was arrested in Bouddha on Friday evening.

The Kathmandu District Court had issued an arrest warrant for him in May last year in connection with the fake Bhutanese refugee scam. Police are preparing to present Pratik before the Kathmandu District Court for remand on Sunday.

Pratik has been accused of assisting a racket that collected hundreds of thousands of rupees from various individuals, promising them resettlement in the US as Bhutanese refugees. Many people charge-sheeted in the case told police that Pratik also collected money from them.

The Kathmandu District Government Attorney’s Office had charge-sheeted several people, including former ministers Top Bahadur Rayamajhi and Bal Krishna Khand, and suspended Secretary Tek Narayan Pandey.

Khand has been released on bail, while Rayamajhi and Pandey remain in judicial custody.
