KATHMANDU: The Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) has clarified that the recent power supply disruptions in areas under the Chanauli Distribution Center in Chitwan are due to technical issues, not load-shedding.
Issuing a statement on Sunday, the NEA said its attraction was drawn toward misleading information circulating on social media, labeling the disruptions as a load-shedding schedule. “Load-shedding is a thing of the past in Nepal,” the NEA said, urging the public not to be misled by rumors spread with ill intent.
According to the NEA, the problem arose due to excessive load on the 33 kV line from the Chanauli 33/11 kV (Baseni) substation to New Bharatpur.
“Due to a drought caused by lower-than-expected rainfall this monsoon, irrigation demand has surged, leading to unusually high electricity load. This requires switching transformers and rerouting power lines, which is why the outage schedule was published,” the statement added.
The NEA also criticized media coverage that used the term “load-shedding” in headlines, despite the notice clearly stating that this is a technical issue expected to be resolved by Wednesday. “It is unfortunate and unjustified to label the situation as load-shedding in headlines,” it added.
The utility has said that the construction of a 33 kV transmission line from the 132 kV Baseni substation to the Chanauli substation is in its final phase. “Once completed, it is expected to resolve the issue,” it added.
