Police submitting investigation report on Monday

KATHMANDU: Kathmandu District Court has allowed police to keep 16 individuals arrested for investigation into the Bhutanese refugee scam in custody for three more days.

According to District Attorney for Kathmandu, Mahesh Kumar Khatri, the district court has extended the police remand by three days. Khatri said police were preparing to submit its investigation report to the District Government Attorney’s Office on Monday.

The District Government Attorney’s Office, Kathmandu, will begin the prosecution process after the police submit their investigation report. “The police are investigating the case under organized crime. We have been told that they will submit the investigation report by 10 am on Monday. Then we will begin the prosecution process,” Khatri added. “We cannot say under which crime we will prosecute the accused without studying the investigation report.”

Police have arrested Deputy Prime Minister Top Bahadur Rayamajhi, former Home Minister Bal Krishna Khand, Secretary at the Office of the Deputy President Tek Narayan Pandey, former Home Minister Ram Bahadur Thapa Badal’s security advisor Dr. Indrajit Rai, Khand’s personal secretary Narendra KC, Bhutanese refugee leader Teknath Rijal, Keshav Dulal, Sanu Bhandari, Sagar Rai, Sandesh Sharma, Tanka Kumar Gurung, Sandeep Rayamajhi, Ram Sharan KC, and Govinda Chaudhary for an investigation into the case.

They have been accused of swindling tens of millions of rupees from hundreds of Nepalis, promising them resettlement in the US as Bhutanese refugees.
