KATHMANDU: A committee formed by the Ministry of Home Affairs to investigate the deaths of two inmates at Sankhuwasabha District Prison has found the involvement of police personnel, prison guards, and some inmates.
The investigation committee is led by Kamal Prasad Pandey, the director of the Prison Department. The team arrived in Sankhuwasabha on Friday to delve into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Binod Tolangi (19), a resident of Madi Municipality-5 in Sankhuwasabha, and Akash Balami (28), originally from Kakani Rural Municipality-7 in Nuwakot. were found dead in Sankhuwasabha District Prison on August 9.
Pandey told news agency RSS that a comprehensive analysis of the prison’s CCTV footage showed that police personnel, prison guards, and some inmates were involved in the incident.
The committee is scheduled to submit its report to the home ministry on Friday.
District Police Office, Sankhuwasbha, has arrested Sub Inspector Laxmi Chaudhary, the prison in-charge, on Sunday, as part of the ongoing investigation. Although an arrest warrant has been issued for Officiating Chief of Sankhuwasaba District Prison, Rajendra Ghimire, the authorities are yet to apprehend him.
