KATHMANDU: The police opened fire on a group of looters at Jagdol in Gokarneshwar Municipality-3 of Kathmandu on Thursday.
According to SSP Dinesh Raj Mainali, the spokesperson for the Kathmandu Valley Police Office, Amar Ghalan (36) from Kamalamai Municipality-2 in Sindhuli sustained gunshot wounds to his thigh and knee. “He has been rushed to Nepal Medical College Teaching Hospital in Attarkhel for treatment,” Mainali stated.
Mainali explained that the police resorted to firing when a group of individuals on three motorcycles attacked the police team. During the incident, the police confiscated a pistol and seven rounds of bullets.
According to the police, the group is involved in looting gold brought into the country by smugglers through the Tatopani Customs Office. “Our team was following the gang based on a tip-off,” SSP Somendra Singh Rathour, the chief of Kathmandu Valley Crime Investigation Office, said.
Furthermore, the police have apprehended Shanta Lama (36) from Sarlahi and Jiten Lama (30) from Sindhupalchowk, and have impounded two motorcycles. However, two of the looters on the third motorcycle managed to evade capture.
The police have intensified efforts to arrest the remaining suspect.
