KATHMANDU: The Kathmandu District Court has declined to place Nepali Congress (NC) lawmaker and medical college promoter Dr. Sunil Sharma under police remand.
The Central Investigation Bureau (CIB) of Nepal Police, who arrested Dr. Sharma from his residence in Mandikhatar on Thursday for an investigation into his academic certificates, had produced Dr Sharma to the district court for a remand hearing on Friday. But a single bench of District Judge Dandapani Sharma directed the police to conduct an investigation against Sharma without detaining him.
Earlier in the day, NC lawmakers strongly criticized the government’s decision to arrest Dr Sharma.
Following the district court’s decision, Dr Sharma has been released. Nonetheless, seven other doctors, who were also arrested for investigation into their citizenship certificates, are still in police custody.
