Pokharel calls for Oli’s immediate release

KATHMANDU: CPN-UML General Secretary Shankar Pokharel has called for the immediate release of party Chairperson KP Sharma Oli.

Writing a post on his social media page, Pokharel urged the government to act responsibly and warned that the cost of political prejudice and vendetta would be high.

“The cost of prejudice and revenge is very high. Act responsibly and release him immediately,” Pokharel wrote.

Police arrested Oli from his residence in Gundu, Bhaktapur, early Saturday morning, less than a day after new Prime Minister Balendra Shah assumed office.
Shah’s first Cabinet meeting, held on Friday afternoon, had decided to implement the report of the high-level commission formed to probe the incidents of last September.

Among others, the commission had recommended action against Oli, then Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak, then Kathmandu CDO Chhabi Rijal, and then Inspector General of Nepal Police Chandra Kuber Khapung for the deaths of 19 people on September 9.

Lekhak has also been arrested. The Cabinet has decided to conduct an additional study before taking action against government employees.
