KATHMANDU: Nepali Congress (NC) leader NP Saud has said that Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli’s recent statement about constitutional amendments contradicts the agreement between the two parties.
Speaking at a party workers’ meeting and interaction in Bardiya on Thursday, Saud, who is also a former foreign affairs minister, said that NC needs to reconsider the relevance and context of the coalition in light of PM Oli’s recent statements. “When we formed the coalition, we acknowledged some weaknesses in the constitution. We included points about amending it and expressed our commitment,” Saud said. “However, the Prime Minister, who expressed commitment to this agreement, has now said that the amendment will be possible only after six years. This goes against the agreement reached between the two parties.”
Saud also urged the government to focus on solving people’s problems. “I want to urge the government to focus on solving people’s problems. Corruption still hasn’t been controlled,” Saud said. “The government must work to ensure good governance that people can feel. The development budget hasn’t been distributed and utilized in a balanced way.”
He also said the NC’s 15th General Convention should be held before the 2027 general election.
Also speaking on the occasion, NC Central Working Committee Member Dila Sangraula said that although NC is in a power-sharing arrangement with CPN-UML, it shouldn’t forget that UML remains their main competitor. She added that the 15th General Convention should be held on time and that membership renewal processes should be completed in a timely manner.
