PM urges all sides to dispel doubts over March 5 polls

KATHMANDU: Prime Minister Sushila Karki has said the government is working with full responsibility and urgency to carry out its duties.

Speaking at an all-party meeting held at her residence on Friday, Karki said the interim government, which was formed specifically to manage the transition period, is committed to holding elections on time with a sense of duty and active engagement.

The election for the House of Representatives is scheduled for March 5.

Urging all sides not to have any doubts about the election, she called for constructive cooperation.

“The government has been holding talks with Gen Z representatives, all political parties, the Election Commission, security agencies, and civil society to address concerns related to the polls,” she said. “The focus now should not be on whether elections will happen, but on how to ensure they are held successfully.”

Karki added that no one will be able to disrupt the elections if all stakeholders are on the same page.

Following the meeting, Minister for Communications and Information Technology, Jagadish Kharel, said the discussion covered election security and all preparations carried out so far. He urged parties not to harbor further doubts about the polls.

Representatives of political parties participating in the meeting urged the government to ensure a secure and conducive environment for confidently participating in the elections.

Nepali Congress leader Pushpa Bhusal said the government must focus on ensuring a fear-free election. Similarly, Nepali Communist Party (NCP) leader Prakash Jwala said the meeting reviewed election security, as well as the preparedness of the Election Commission and the government. “Since this is an election government, it must remain fully focused on the polls,” he added.

Similarly, Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) leader Shishir Khanal expressed the party’s commitment to helping ensure successful elections.

During the meeting, Minister for Home Affairs Om Prakash Aryal and heads of all four security agencies briefed the participants on security assessments and preparations for the polls.
