PM meets land shark victims, promises to form high-level commission

KATHMANDU: Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal stated on Saturday that the government is committed to addressing the demands of victims of illegal money lending.

Dahal met with the victims at his official residence on Saturday, assuring them that justice would be served soon. The victims have been protesting in Kathmandu for the past few days. Victims from different districts gathered in Mahottari of Bardibas and walked to Kathmandu to draw attention to their plight. It took them 11 days to reach Kathmandu.

Dahal informed the victims that the government has already initiated the process of bringing unscrupulous lenders under the ambit of the law. For this, he added that the government has already begun the process to amend necessary laws. “We are amending existing laws to find a long-term solution to this problem,” Dahal told the victims, assuring them that the government would leave no stone unturned to provide justice to them.

He also mentioned that the government will form a high-level commission to address the demands raised by the victims, and that the process to form the commission has already begun.

Among other demands, the victims have requested that the government form a high-level commission, resolve their pending cases in court, and make loan contracts made by unscrupulous lenders invalid.

The government has formed a talks team led by Joint Secretary Rudra Devi Sharma to hold talks with loan shark victims. Similarly, Manoj Paswan is representing the victims in negotiations with the government. The government has also decided to amend the National Criminal Procedure (Code) Act to criminalize illegal money lending.
