KATHMANDU: Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal has expressed commitment to take the initiative to resolve the ongoing impasse in the House of Representatives.
In a meeting with Speaker Dev Raj Ghimire at the Prime Minister’s residence in Baluwatar on Friday morning, Dahal also urged Speaker Ghimire to proactively contribute to resolving the issue from his side.
Quoting Prime Minister Dahal, the Speaker’s office stated, “I am committed to playing my part in ensuring the resumption of House proceedings. I urge you to take the necessary steps from your end as well.”
Dahal also said he would discuss the matter with the leader of the main opposition party – CPN-UML Chairman KP Sharma Oli.
UML disrupted the House of Representatives sessions throughout the month of Shrawan (mid-July to mid-August), demanding the formation of a parliamentary committee to investigate gold smuggling through Tribhuvan International Airport.
Speaker Ghimire brought the Prime Minister’s attention to the urgent need to break the deadlock, emphasizing that the halted proceedings have conveyed a negative message. “The obstruction of House proceedings is regrettable. Lawmakers have not been able to put forth their views on important topics,” Ghimire said. “There is a need to forge consensus to allow the House to function smoothly.”
Ghimire also said that the disruption of House proceedings has not been well-received by the general populace. “Therefore, it is imperative for both the ruling party and the opposition to engage in meaningful discussions to facilitate the resumption of House activities.”
The Speaker also drew the attention of the Prime Minister toward the delay in appointing chairpersons of the parliamentary committees. “Lawmakers have been saying that the House has been failing to enact laws. I am playing my role responsibly. But there is no positive development yet,” Ghimire said. “The meetings of senior leaders too have failed to forge consensus.”
