KATHMANDU: Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahahl has expressed commitment to reduce the number of ministries in the federal government.

Speaking at the National Assembly on Tuesday, Dahal said the number of members in his cabinet won’t be more than 10% of the total members of the House of Representatives.

The lower house has 275 members – including 110 elected under the proportional representation (PR) system.

Stating that the reduction of even one minister would save tens of millions of rupees, Dahal said he was working to forge a consensus among coalition partners to reduce the number of ministries.

Some province governments have already reduced the number of ministries.

Dahal also said that the government will implement the report of the Parliamentary Special Committee on Federalism Implementation Study and Monitoring led by Kimlal Devkota.

Among others, the committee has suggested to the government to limit the number of province ministers at 10% of the total assembly members.
