Phewa Dialogue: Participants deliberate on climate change and governance

KATHMANDU: The second edition of the Phewa Dialogue concluded in Chengdu, China, on Friday.

Jointly organized by the China Center for South Asia Studies (CCSAS) at Sichuan University and Tribhuvan University of Nepal, the two-day event brought together scholars, think tank representatives, and policy practitioners from across China, South Asia, and neighboring regions, according to a statement issued by CCSAS.

The Phewa Dialogue is an academic platform aimed at fostering in-depth discussions on strategic issues related to regional development, with a focus on promoting mutual understanding, building consensus, and enhancing cooperation among participating countries and institutions.

This year’s dialogue was held under the theme “South Asian Development under Climate Change and Governance.” Participants engaged in discussions on governance strategies for climate adaptation and mitigation, highlighting their importance for sustainable development in the region amid growing global climate challenges.

Speaking at the event, Chinese Ambassador to Nepal Zhang Maoming said cooperation between China and Nepal in addressing climate change has grown significantly. He added that China’s green transition is creating new development opportunities for South Asian countries, including Nepal.

Vice President of Sichuan University, Prof Liu Chao, said more than 400 South Asian students, including over 100 from Nepal, have studied at the university under various programs. He also pointed to Sichuan University’s strengths in areas such as climate change, disaster management, carbon neutrality, and green energy.

Tribhuvan University Rector Prof Khadga KC expressed confidence that the dialogue would enhance inter-regional connectivity and strengthen Track Two-level understanding between South Asia and China.
