KATHMANDU: Paragliding enthusiasts have a reason to rejoice as the adventure sport has resumed, albeit from a new location.

Previously, paragliding operations in Pokhara were centered around Sarangkot. However, with the inauguration of Pokhara International Airport (PIA), the Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal (CAAN) instructed paragliding companies to shift to a new location citing hindrances to flight operation.

Complying with CAAN’s directive, paragliding operators initially attempted to relocate to Mandredhunga. However, the operations couldn’t become feasible as the takeoff point was about two kilometers farther from Sarangkot. Also, there were some practical problems in flight operations in the higher elevations.

CAAN has now permitted paragliding companies to take off from Toripani. Toripani is located between Sarangkot and Mandredhunga. Nevertheless, CAAN has directed paragliding operators to relocate the landing zone to a higher position in Pame.

The first group of paragliders took off from Toripani on Sunday, according to the Nepal Airsports Association (NAA).

Paragliding is one of the popular adventure activities in the lake city. It offers a breathtaking visual experience, providing paragliders with a bird’s-eye view of Pokhara city and the majestic peaks of the Annapurna range to the north.

Since its inception in the late 1990s, paragliding has become a popular adventure activity in Pokhara. The city now boasts more than five dozen licensed paragliding companies and nearly 400 skilled pilots. These companies collectively serve thousands of paragliding enthusiasts each year.
