SURKHET: A devastating earthquake with a magnitude of 6.4 struck Jajarkot and Rukum West districts of Karnali Province late Friday, resulting in over 100 deaths, police say.

The earthquake with the epicenter in Ramidanda of Jajarkot stuck at 11:47 pm on Friday, according to Nepal Earthquake Monitoring and Research Center.

Deputy Mayor of Nalgad Municipality of Jajarkot, Sarita Singh, is among the decreased. According to the local authorities, she died when her house in Jajarkot district headquarters collapsed. The death toll has reached 92 in Jajarkot district, while 55 are injured.

Similarly, 36 have been reported dead in Rukum West. The earthquake has caused significant loss of life and property in Wards 11, 12, 12, and 14 of Athbiskot and Ward-2 of Sani Bheri, say police.

Additionally, the local units of Bheri, Nalgad, Kushe, Bareko, and Chhedagad in Jajarkot have also suffered substantial damage to both life and property.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal, Energy Minister Shakti Basnet, and former Home Minister Janardan Sharma have departed from Kathmandu for Jajarkot, accompanied by a medical team from the Nepal Army. Sharma and Basnet are elected representatives from Rukum West and Jajarkot districts, respectively.
