Opposition warns PM Oli against bringing ordinance related to party split

KATHMANDU: Opposition parties have warned the government against introducing an ordinance related to party split.

Amid concerns that the government was preparing to issue such an ordinance, opposition leaders met with Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli on Monday and submitted a memorandum outlining their objections.

The memorandum was submitted following a decision made at a meeting of opposition parties last Friday. In their memorandum, the opposition parties have raised several concerns about governance and accountability.

A key criticism in the memorandum focused on the ruling party’s acceptance of land “donations” from a businessperson facing court case. They have described it as “a mockery of good governance”. “It is a mockery of good governance when the Prime Minister himself advocates for businessmen facing court cases, and his party illegally accepts land worth more than one billion rupees as a ‘donation’,” the memorandum states.

The opposition parties have also accused the government of showing no serious commitment to resolving the problems faced by hundreds of thousands of cooperative victims. They alleged that the ruling coalition has displayed discriminatory behavior by protecting its own members involved in cooperative fraud while pursuing others.

CPN (Maoist Center) Chairperson Pushpa Kamal Dahal, CPN (Unified Socialist) Chairperson Madhav Kumar Nepal, Rastriya Prajatantra Party Chairperson Rajendra Lingden, Rastriya Swatantra Party Vice President Dol Prasad Aryal and Aam Janata Party Chairperson Prabhu Sah have signed the memorandum. Although Mahantha Thakur, the chairperson of the Loktantrik Samajwadi Party (LSP), attended the opposition meeting, his signature was notably absent from the memorandum.
