Oli meets Modi in New York

KATHMANDU: Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli met with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New York on Sunday evening.

According to a member of the Nepali delegation to the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly, foreign ministers and other officials of the two countries were present in the meeting.

While Nepal’s foreign ministry has not officially said anything about the meeting, Oli said he had a fruitful meeting with the Prime Minister of India on the sidelines of the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly. “During the meeting, various matters of bilateral relations were discussed,” Oli wrote on social media platform X.

Modi took to social media platform X to say that he had a very good meeting with Prime Minister Oli in New York.

“The India-Nepal friendship is very robust and we look forward to adding even more momentum to our ties. Our talks focused on issues such as energy, technology and trade,” Modi wrote in his post.

This is the first meeting between the two South Asian leaders since they began their respective terms as Prime Minister.

Oli was appointed to the position on March 14 leading a coalition government of CPN (Maoist Centre), CPN (Unified Socialist) and Janata Samajbadi Party, while Modi began his third term as Prime Minister on May 30, 2019.

Earlier, Oli met Bhutanese Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay. According to Oli, the entire spectrum of bilateral relations and multilateral cooperation was discussed during the meeting.

Foreign Minister Dr Arzu Rana Deuba was also present in the meeting.

Oli also met the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk at Nepal’s Permanent Mission in New York. He also addressed the session on the Summit of the Future earlier in the day.
