Oli elected UML chair for third term

KATHMANDU:  KP Sharma Oli has been re-elected chairperson of the CPN-UML for a third time.

In the voting to elect the party’s new leadership for a four-year term, Oli secured 1,663 votes. His only contender, Ishwar Pokharel, polled 564 votes.

Oli and Pokahrel had contested the election by forming separate panels. Although Oli’s panel won most of the office-bearer positions, the results were not a complete sweep. Two key leaders from Pokhrel’s panel—Deputy Chairperson Gokarna Raj Bista and Deputy General Secretary Yogesh Bhattarai—managed to secure victories.

The race for general secretary emerged as one of the tightest contests of the convention. Oli’s nominee, Shankar Pokhrel, ultimately prevailed after a close fight. He received 1,228 votes against Surendra Prasad Pandey’s 999.

In a notable setback for Oli, his loyal lieutenant Bishnu Prasad Rimal lost the deputy general secretary race. Rimal’s defeat was among the few surprises in an otherwise favorable outcome for the incumbent leadership.

In the vice-chairperson category, Prithvi Subba Gurung led the field with 1,737 votes, followed by Bishnu Prasad Paudel, Ram Bahadur Thapa, Gokarna Raj Bista, and Guru Prasad Baral.

Oli-aligned candidates also dominated the deputy general secretary race as two of his candidates – Lekhraj Bhatta and Raghubir Mahaseth – were elected. Yogesh Bhattarai from Pokharel’s panelwas also elected deputy general secretary.

The Oli panel, however, made a clean sweep of the nine secretary positions.
